1. Place the pears, figs, ginger, cloves, vinegar, brown sugar, and pepper in a small saucepan and cook over low heat. Cover, stir occasionally until the pears and figs are softened, about 2 minutes. Remove the cloves. The compote can be prepared in advance and refrigerated for up to 2 days. Add the scallions and peanuts just before serving if you prepare the compote in advance.
2. Spread about 1 tsp (5 ml) of goat cheese on each baguette slice. Top with a heaping teaspoon (about 7 ml) of warm or room temperature compote. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for up to 1 hour. Best when served at room temperature.
